Operating systems PC/Mac - An operating system if one of the main components in your computer. It manages the computers processes, memory, hardware and software. It allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer language. Without an operating system a computer would basically be pointless.
Windows - Windows is probably one of the most popular operating systems. Windows comes with almost every computer that you buy unless its an apple product. The latest windows version is windows 10 which was released to the public in 2015 and featured many new things from windows 8. Windows 10 was free for users to upgrade if they already had windows 8 or 7. Mac OS - Mac OS is one of the biggest competitors to windows, Mac OS comes installed with all Apple computers. Mac OS gives the user a much different look than windows, but often people prefer the sleek look of Mac OS to the look of windows. Even though many people might prefer the look of the Mac it is very expensive if you were to buy one, this means some people may put up with windows to save some money Linux - Linux is one of the least popular computer operating systems, it is an open source system which is purposely designed so it could be modified by the user. The one advantage that this operating system has over Mac OS and Windows is the fact that it's free and can be customized to the users specifications. If you're going to get Linux you need to know what you're doing as its considerably more difficult to use compared to the other OS's Handheld - There are 2 main operating systems when it comes to handheld devices, these are Windows CE and PalmOS. Windows CE is a subfamily developed by Microsoft, this operating system is optimized for having minimal memory which makes it perfect for handheld devices. PalmOS, this operating system which is made for things like PDA's. Due to its design PalmOS can only run one app at a time unlike the other operating systems which can handle many at one given time. The screen is mainly monochrome on these devices. This OS is a Linux based platform. Mobile - There are 3 main competitors when it comes to mobile operating systems, these are BREW, Symbian OS, and Mophun. Symbian OS was first developed by Symbian Ltd and was primarily made for Nokia and Sony Ericsson's. This wasn't its only purpose, Symbian OS is also used on many Japanese mobile phones for headsets sold in Japan. Symbian OS is an open source. BREW, this platform is able to run programs and also download at the same time, this is because it is a binary run time for wireless. Although this OS doesn't sound very exciting is was very useful as it allowed players to text and send pictures at the same time, this made multitasking much more efficient. Morphun is an OS which is purely used to create mobile games as well as applications. The games are developed using C and C++ programming languages. Any applications that are made using this must be certified. |
